It was in 1908 that George Pelliotis first recognized the dangers of heat exhaustion while playing tennis in Melbourne, Australia. He developed the heat exhaustion syndrome, a symptom of which was heat pain, tiredness and headaches. It was this recognition of the risks of heat stroke that led to further research and investigation into the causes and symptoms of heat exhaustion.
Sport scientists continue to study how the physical conditions of players affect their performance, especially in contact sports. Some sports such as darts and billiards require a lot of skill, technique, and speed. Other sports such as baseball, football and basketball, can be highly fast paced and involve a large number of players. It is these very fast moving games that present the greatest health and safety issues and the biggest health and safety concerns by far in contact sports.
The International Olympic Committee created the guidelines for standard competition in sports as a guide to help determine events’ boundaries. The sport of fencing was put under the authority of the United States when the Olympic Movement was governed by America. Fencing is not an exact sport term, since it involves a lot of manipulation of the body and sharp tools. In the dictionary, the definition of the word sport is the competition of things, usually for reward or esteem, among persons of similar ability and qualities. It can also mean that things undertaken with a view to winning, so the Olympic Sports competition is more specifically defined as sport, as it implies both physical and mental qualities.
The I.O.C.D.A.M (International Olympic Committee Desiring Adequate Doping Analogous) defines the Olympic Sports by stipulating three elements: Physical Exertion, Role-oriented Exertion and participation or involvement in the development of skills. These three elements are considered necessary for a sport to be defined as such. One can also define the Olympic Sports by stipulating its level of skill: competitive sports require skill, non-competitive sports require speed and non-physical exertion sports refer to activities that use only body motion. The I.O.C.D.A.M. guidelines have been criticized for being too broad and vague, but the International Olympic Committee has remained steadfast in its definition, claiming that the guideline does not allow athletes to take drugs to enhance their performance and does not promote any form of cheating. Sports that do not fall under the scope of the I.O.C.D.A.M., such as cycling and gymnastics, are not covered by the Olympic Sports but it is not stated that these sports can never be Olympic Sports.
